Kiobo Homepage

1. What am I looking at when I go to Kiobo?

You are looking at a cloud of popular topics (or tags) that relate to sites where people are currently browsing. Hover and click on a specific topic or person to discover more. Customize the tags and people that are displayed by clicking on the “Customize” or “Categories” button. Don’t forget to explore the cool features and functionality we’ve included in the black vertical bar on the right had side of your screen.

2. What are all those words scattered around with icons of people surrounding them?

Those words are tags. This means that there are people currently looking at a webpage related to that tag.

3. What is a “Tag”?

“A tag is a (relevant) keyword or term associated with or assigned to a piece of information such as a website, thus describing the item and enabling keyword-based classification and search of information.” – Wikipedia

4. Why are some tags bigger than others?

The size of the tag represents the popularity of that specific topic. If there are 100 people looking at sites related to “books” and only 30 looking at sites related to “cars”, expect to seen the tag “books” to be larger.

5. Why do you have a number below to the tag?

The number represents the number of Kiobo users that are browsing on a site related to that specific tag.

6. What happens when I hover over a Tag?

You will see a list of the top sites people are looking at that relate to that tag.

7. What happens when I click on a tag?

Think of it as a zoom into a universe of sites related to that keyword you clicked on. You can see the web sites that relate to the specific tag you just clicked on and people who are browsing on those sites.

8. What happens when I click on the icon of a site?

A new tab on your browser will open and you will be taken to that web page. It is important to note that Kiobo will remain open just where you left it.

9. What are those “things” surrounding the Tags?

Those icons represent people. That means there is an actual person looking at a specific site that relates to that tag.

10. What happens when I hover over the icon of a person?

You will be able to see a quick snapshot of that person. Click on the icon to unveil more about that user.

11. Why are some people represented with a different color?

If you have befriended a person that is part of the Kiobo community, you will see him as a blue icon. Faded or “shadow” icons represent users that have modified their privacy setting to “Keep my activity anonymous”. Yellow users are people you have become a fan of.

12. What happens when I click on the icon of a person?

You will be able to see more details about that person. The other person chooses how much information is revealed about his identity and his browsing behavior. So, only the information which he has chosen to share will be visible.

13. Why are people appearing and disappearing?

The visualization shows how users come, go and browse around the internet – particularly web sites related to tags on the screen. For example, if my friend John is going from a site related to “books” to a site regarding “sports” I’ll see his icon go from the “books” tag to the “sports” tag.

14. I only see random people around. Can I invite my friends?

By linking you’re your Kiobo account to your Facebook account, you’ll automatically be able to connect to your friends who have also become part of the Kiobo community.

15. Can I import my friends from social networks I’m already a member of a social network (i.e. Facebook / MySpace)?

Once you’ve linked your Kiobo account with your Facebook/OpenSocial account, you’ll be able to see all your friends who are also part of the Kiobo community.

16. I can’t see any of my friends on the realtime visualization. Where are they?

Well, you will be unable to see them if your friends are not currently online, if they have chosen to share anonymously, or have decided not to share their browsing. However, you can customize the visualization to only show you what your friends or a group of people are doing. For more on how to do this go to the section of the FAQ.

17. What is that “categories” button on the bottom left corner?

This is a quick shortcut for you to discover sites related to a particular category. If you click on the button on the bottom left corner, a list of categories will pop-up. If, for example, you click on the “Business and economy” category, the visualization will populated with tags such as “finance”, “business”, “investments”,…...

Customized View

18. What are those tabs at the top of the display?

Those tabs are filters that give you the ability customize and tailor the content of the visualization

19. What is shown on the “Home” tab?

The “Home” tab shows where the Kiobo community as a whole is browsing.

20. I’m not interested in seeing the tags or people initially displayed. Can I customize the content of this display?

You can select what information is displayed in the visualization. After clicking on the “Customize” button, you may:
Step 1 – select what you want to see, it can be a group of tags/topics you are interested in, or a group of people.
Step 2 – fill in the box with the tags or people you want to see. We have pre-populated some choices you might be interested in.
Step 3 – Save your visualization and give it a name.

21. Can I save a customized view?

Yes. Once you have selected the parameters of your customized view, you can assign it a name and save it. A new tab will appear on the top of your screen with your saved parameters. Next time you come to Kiobo you can simply click on that tab and view only your selected topics.

22. I ran out of customized tabs. What do I do?

You can save up to 4 customized tabs. If you want to create a new tab, you would have to erase/modify one of your previously defined tabs.

23. I can’t find the “Customize” tab anymore. Where did it go?

You can only save up to 4 customized tabs. Delete one of these and the “Customize’ tab will reappear.

24. I want to customize by more generic categories, what do I do?

On the bottom left corner of the blue screen, there is a black corner with the word “categories”. If you click there, a list of categories will pop-up. Click on any of these categories to find out what people are browsing related to that category.

25. What is the black vertical bar on the right hand of the screen?

We have created an alternative way to discover and share sites. It is the place where you can search for past/historic information based on past browsing activity

Sites

26. What do I see when I click on Sites > “For You”?

You will see a list of the top sites people are looking at that relate to that tag.

27. What do I see when I click on Sites > “Popular”?

Here you will be able to see which are the most popular sites that Kiobo community has visited

28. What do I see when I click on Sites > “Growing”?

These are sites that in the recent past have been gaining quite a bit of traffic. This allows you to discover the newer sites that are rapidly becoming more popular.

29. What happens when I click on one of the sites?

Kiobo will open a new that site in a new browser or browser tab.

Tag Cloud

30. What is a “Tagcloud”?

Wikipedia’s definition says it all: “A tag cloud (or weighted list in visual design) is a visual depiction of user-generated tags used typically to describe the content of web sites. Tags are usually single words and are typically listed alphabetically, and the importance of a tag is shown with font size or color. [1] Thus both finding a tag by alphabet and by popularity is possible. The tags are usually hyperlinks that lead to a collection of items that are associated with a tag.”

31. What do I see when I click on Tagcloud > “Mine”?

This tagcloud represents the most prevalent set of tags that relate to the sites your group of friends visit most frequently. For example, if all your friends are surfers, you will most likely see tags such as “surf”, “tides”, etc… as part of this tagcloud.

33. What do I see when I click on Tagcloud > “Popular”?

This tagcloud shows the most prevalent set of tags that the Kiobo community as a whole has visited most often.

34. What happens when I click on one of the individual tags in the tagcloud?

Kiobo will show a list of the most popular sites that relate to that specific tag.

35. What is that icon that looks like a magnifying glass?

This is a search tool. Click on this icon to search for stuff within Kiobo. You can search for Sites, Tags, or People, Simply click on the and type in what you are looking for.

Users

36. What do I see when I click on Users > “My Friends”?

If you’ve linked your Kiobo account to any of our partnering social networks (Facebook, MySpace…) you’ll find you friends that are also part of the Kiobo community. Hover or click on their avatar to discover more.

37. Can I add my friends from social networks I’m already a member of?

You don’t need to rebuild your social network – we leverage the ones already out there. Go to the “Settings” button on the top right corner of your screen. Once you’ve done this click on the “Link to Facebook/MySpace” button to link your Kiobo account. If you’ve linked your Kiobo account to Facebook, you will be able to see on Kiobo your friends that have also done the same. This way you don’t have to start from scratch and rebuild your social network.

Customized View

38. Can I see more info about my friends?

If you click on the icon of one of your friends will be able to see their top sites, tagcloud, clickstream, and friends.

39. What is a “Fan”?

Fans are people that admire others, but do are not necessarily friends.

40. Can I become a “Fan” of another Kiobo user?

Yes you can. If you find someone who has similar interests to yours, you can simply click on the “become a fan of” button and become a fan of this person. People you are a fan of will be easily recognizable on the visualization as their icon will become yellow.

41. Can I become a “Fan” of another Kiobo user?

42. Can someone become a fan of me?

If you allow so, yes. When someone becomes your fan, he’ll be added you the list of people under “My Fans”. If you don’t want anyone to become your fan, you may turn off this functionality altogether by going to “Settings” > “Profile” and removing the check next to the question of “Anyone Can Be My Fan”.

43. Can I control who can become my fan?

You can’t control who becomes your fan, but you may turn off this functionality altogether by going to “Settings”  “Profile” and removing the check next to the question of “Anyone Can Be My Fan”.

44. What do I see when I click on Users > “Similar”?

Once we know what kind of stuff you like, we are able to recommend people to you that have similar tastes and interests. If you like, you can become a Fan of these recommended friends by simply clicking on “become a fan of”

45. How do I find people?

Click on the seach icon , and type in the name of the person you are looking for on the search box that appears at the top of the page.

46. How do I add friends to my list?

The only way you can be someone’s friends is by already being their friends in an existing social network account (i.e. Facebook, MySpace) and having both of you join the Kiobo. So, invite your friends to check Kiobo out and enhance your browsing experience.

Clickstream

47. What does “clickstream” mean?

Think of a clickstream as your browsing history.

48. What happens when I click on Clickstream > “Mine”?

Here you can see the list of sites that you have visited most recently. We go to great lengths to block adult sites and secure sites from being part of your clickstream, so don’t worry. Furthermore, you may edit this list by clicking on the “Manage my Clickstream” button. Part of your clickstream will be visible to everyone, other parts of it will be viewable only by your friends, and other sections only viewable by you. It all depends on the privacy settings that you’ve selected on your toolbar.

49. I want to edit my clickstream. How can I do that?

If you wish to delete, or modify part of your clicksteam can do so by clicking on the “manage my clickstream” button located at the top right corner.

Registration, Privacy and Security

50. Can I go to Kiobo without registering an account?

During our private alpha launch, you won’t be able to see Kiobo without and invite code or a registered account. When we decide to transition to an open beta launce anyone will be able to see the realtime visualization. You can take high level glance at what the Kiobo community is doing without having an account by simply going to http://www.kiobo.com. However, most of the functionality that we have built into Kiobo is enabled when people become part of the community.

51. Why do I need a username?

We require you to have a username for Kiobo. If everyone decides to use their real name as a username, the more likely everyone is to be able to find people that are also part of the Kiobo community.

52. Why do you need my e-mail address?

We require you to provide a valid, active email address to facilitate any communication about your account with Kiobo. We are very sensitive to maintaining privacy and your email information will not be shared with anyone. Ever!

53. Why do you need to know my age?

The Children’s Online Privacy Act (COPPA) requires Kiobo to verify that all registered users are over the age of 13.

54. Why do you need to know my gender or location?

Kiobo is supported by advertising. In order for us to match the right ads to the right people, it is very useful to have broad information about our users. This also means that you are more likely to see an ad that is more relevant to you. We hope that this is a win-win situation for both our users and our advertisers.

55. What do you mean by “My Profile is Open to the public”?

Content to be filled in. Thanks for waiting while we iron out the kinks!

56. What do you mean by “Anyone can be my fan”?

This means that other Kiobo users will be able to follow you around. If you want to turn off this functionality simply uncheck the box next to the question.

57. What do you mean by “I want to share my clickstream with my friends”?

If select this option, your friends from Facebook/MySpace who have also become part of Kiobo will be able to see part of your clickstream. For more information of what a clickstream is and how it works to the “Clickstream” Section in the FAQ

58. What is an Avatar?

An avatar is a user’s online representation of himself. It can be a picture, image, etc..

59. How is the avatar going to be used?

It’ll be shown whenever you or another user sees information about you.

60. How does the “clickstream manager” work?

The clickstream manager is a tool designed to help you see and manage your browsing history. It works similar to an email account, however instead of showing a list of emails it’ll show you a list of the sites you’ve visited.

61. Can I see my clickstream?

Yes. The clickstream manager allows you to see what your browsing history looks like. It shows in chronological order the pages you’ve visited, displays the title of the page, indicates how long ago you were there, and shows the tags associated to each page.

62. Who else can see my clickstream?

That depends entirely on you. The color of the outline around each page log indicates if that specific page log is public (yellow outline), viewable only by your friends (green outline), or private (blue outline).

63. Can I edit my clickstream?

Of course. Click on the check box next to each page log in the clickstream manager. Then select the change you want to make by clicking on colored buttons at the top of the clickstream manager. You can “Mark as Public”, “Mark as friends”, “Mark as private”, “Delete”, or “Block URL”.

64. Can I delete part of my clickstream?

Yes you can. Simply go to the clickstream manager, select the sites that you want to delete and click on the big red “delete” button at the top of the clickstream manager.

65. Can I edit my clickstream without going to the clickstream manager?

Yes you can. You can do it directly from the toolbar that is sitting on the top of your browser. Click in the toolbar with the Kiobo logo (insert logo here) and scroll down to the “Delete activity from…”. Here we give you the option to delete activity from the last minute, hour, day, or week. If you want to delete or modify only a specific site you will have to do it directly from the clickstream manager.

66. Can I search for specific pages, sites, or tags which I’ve browsed in the past?

We have built in a search functionality to our clickstream manager to help you browse through your browsing history. Simply type what you are looking for on the search box and Kiobo will go fetch what you’ve been looking for.

67. I want to edit a big chunk of my clickstream quickly. Can I do that?

Yes. On the Clickstream manager, click on the “Mass Functions” link. Here we give you the ability to delete big chunks of you clickstream.

68. What is the “Blocklist”?

We give you the ability to block specific pages and sites from being recorded as part of your clickstream. You can block sites in 2 ways:

  1. Directly from the “Clickstream manager” by selecting the pages you want to block and then click on the white “Block URL” button.
  2. You can also add go to the “Blocklist” section and type in the domain you want to block.

69. Can I see which sites I’ve already blocked?

You can see them by clicking on the “Blocklist” button.

70. Can I link my account to my existing social network accounts (i.e. Facebook, MySpace)?

We enable you to associate you social network account to your Kiobo account. This way you don’t have to recreate your social network all over again. For example if you and your friend John both have Facebook accounts and you have associated it to your Kiobo account, you’ll be able to find each other on Kiobo.

71. Can I restrict access to my clickstream to a specific group of my friends?

The “Manage Friends” button allows you to select which of your friends can view the clickstream you have only allowed your friends to see. For example, if only want to share your clickstream with a group of you most intimate friends you can block everyone else from seeing your private clickstream.

73. Can I register directly through Facebook or MySpace?

Yes you can. Log on to your Facebook or MySpace account and add our app to your profile. Once you’ve done this, you’ll automatically become a registered Kiobo user

74. Will it make a difference if I register directly through Facebook or MySpace?

It will actually make Kiobo more functional. You will have all the benefits and functionality that users who register directly at Kiobo.com. Additionally, you’ll be able to connect to all of your friends who join Kiobo in one fell swoop.

Toolbar

75. What is a toolbar?

A toolbar is usually situated at the top of the browser screen and includes a range of choices which perform common actions for a software application.

76. Why am I being asked to download the “Kiobo Toolbar”?

Kiobo is founded on the premise that our users will be interested in sharing what they see. By downloading the toolbar you will have the ability to share your browsing behavior with the rest of the community, just your friends, or with nobody. It is entirely up to you. In addition, it also allows you to edit what you share, and whom you want to share it with. Our toolbar is a single button that will be added to your browser and is represented by our logo . 77. What does the “Kiobo toolbar” do?

The toolbar does several things. Depending on the mode you have set your toolbar at, it registers your browsing activity and feeds it to the Kiobo community. It also allows you to modify how much information you share and who you share it with, to delete previous history, or if you wish, to block a site from being part of your browsing history. 78. Can I change my privacy settings directly from the toolbar?

We want you to be in control of what you share. For that reason we have designed our toolbar to allow you to change your privacy setting whenever you want, even without having to go to Kiobo.com The toolbar also allows you to modify what information about your browsing behavior gets sent to our database. For example, you can click on the Kiobo toolbar button, go to your privacy settings and select “Keep my activity anonymous” and you will no longer be associated with your browsing activity.

79. If I download the toolbar for a specific browser, say Firefox, will it be active if I open a different browser like Internet Explorer (IE)?

No. You will be sharing your browsing behavior only if you use a browser that has the toolbar installed.

80. Is my personal information secure with Kiobo?

You are in control of your personal information. Your browsing information is shared only with people you choose to share it with. We go to great lengths to secure your personal information. You can details of our privacy policy here

81. Do you display adult sites?

We want to keep it PG. So, if you are interested in discovering new adult sites, Kiobo is not the tool for you. We do our best to make sure that we identify and not record your visits to adult sites.

82. Do you record my browsing activity if I stumble into an “adult site”?

We do our best to make sure that we identify and not record your visits to adult sites - whether intentional or not.

83. What is a secure site?

Secure sites are those that use SSL. When you browse to these sites you will notice that the url changes to start with “https” as opposed to the regular “http”. When you go to any banking site for example you will see that the url will change and start with a “https” prefix.

84. Do you record my browsing activity when I’m viewing a secure site?

Kiobo will not track personal content within secured sites; in fact it is unable to do so. For example if John Doe is checking his email on “Gmail”, other users will be able to see that John is on gmail.com but unable to see his emails or anything that happened after John “logged-in” to email account.

85. Can I use Kiobo on multiple computers?

You can use Kiobo from any computer with internet access. You can login and discover sites by simply going to www.kiobo.com and login in using your preferred user login name. However, if you are using a computer or a browser that doesn’t have the Kiobo toolbar installed you will be unable to share your browsing activity with the rest of the Kiobo community.

86. Can more than one person maintain Kiobo accounts on the same computer?

Not with the same browser type on the same account. One person can have the toolbar installed for Firefox and another person can have it installed for IE. But you cannot have multiple people register their browsing activity through the same type of browser on a single account. If you have your computer setup to use seperate accounts, each account is managed seperately. The installed toolbar in a browser is tied to a particular Kiobo account.

87. How can I change the e-mail address I use as my Kiobo user name?

Very simple. Once you log in to Kiobo.com, click on the “Account Settings” link at the top right corner of your screen. Then go to “Profile” where you can edit and change any of the fields in your profile such as you e-mail address. After you are done, click on the “Save Changes” button.

88. How do I change the password to my Kiobo account?

Once you log in to Kiobo.com, click on the “Account Settings” link at the top right corner of your screen. Here you can edit and change any of the fields in your profile such as your password.

89. How do I change my password if I’m using my Facebook / OpenSocial / OpenID account to log in?

You would have to change your password by going to these sites and changing it from there. We do not have the capability of changing from within Kiobo.

90. How do I break the link between my Kiobo account and my Facebook / OpenSocial account?

Once you log in to Kiobo.com, click on the “Settings” link at the top right corner of your screen. Here you can choose to break links with any of your social network accounts.

91. How do I delete my Kiobo account?

Once you log in to Kiobo.com, click on the “Settings” link at the top right corner of your screen. Here you can click on the “Delete my account” button on the bottom right corner.

Problems Signing In and Out

92. I forgot my password. What do I do?

If you are logging in using your Kiobo usename, just click on the “I forgot my password” button in the log-in page and we will send an email to you with a link to reset your password.

93. How do I sign out of Kiobo?

Just click on the top right corner of your screen you will find a “Sign Out” button.
